Concussions can produce a wide array of symptoms and, as such, it is impossible to employ a cookie-cutter approach to its management, rehabilitation and return-to-sport timelines.
The Shift Concussion Management Program is an advanced, comprehensive, and multifaceted approach to concussion awareness, assessment and its management. This protocol involves the collection and assessment of objective and subjective clinical data in order to develop individualized intervention strategies, tailor sport specific rehabilitative strategies and guide safe return to sport/daily life activities.
Baseline testing serves to objectively assess an athlete pre-injury. Should one sustain a concussion, these baselines values can be used to assess the level of post-injury impairment and track a patient’s recovery by comparing post-injury values to baselines values. This allows for a more accurate and objective post-injury assessment, which will guide proper management strategies and determine safe return-to-play.
Shift utilizes a computerized neurocognitive test as part of all baseline and post-injury assessment protocols. This test is used to provide an objective measurement of various aspects of neurocognitive performance such as memory recall, reaction time, processing speed, and attention/concentration. These cognitive processes are often affected by a concussive injury, and as such this type of testing provides us with important information when managing an athlete’s recovery.
