Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. During an Acupuncture treatment, needles are inserted on points located on a network of pathways connected to the function of muscles, tendons, nerves, joints, and/or internal organ systems, with the goal of restoring and maintaining balance, structure, and function.
The protocol used is individualized towards the client and developed based upon the results of a thorough assessment combined with the therapeutic goals as indicated by the client. Acupuncture is a safe and effective drug-free treatment, which can often help in situations where relief cannot be attained through conventional treatments.
Most people feel no discomfort as the fine needles are gently placed. Furthermore, clients often report a feeling of well-being and relaxation associated with Acupuncture treatment.
Contemporary Medical Acupunture is offered at Health Partners by our Chiropractors as well as our Physiotherapists as either a stand-alone treatment or a modality used along with other therapeutic approaches.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), energy, or “Qi” (pronounced “chee”) flows along specific pathways, or meridians, throughout the body. This constant flow of energy keeps our internal forces balanced. Occasionally, the flow of energy can become blocked in our bodies which can lead to pain, lack of function, or illness. Acupuncture therapy can release blocked Qi in the body and stimulates function, evoking the body’s natural healing response through various physiological processes.
Acupuncture has well-documented effects on the nervous system, endocrine and immune function, the cardiovascular system, and digestive health. It can release endorphins (the body’s natural pain-killers), manage inflammation by increasing local circulation, and modulate the immune system. By stimulating the body’s various internal healing mechanisms, acupuncture can help relieve pain, support digestive function, improve sleep, alleviate headaches, and improve overall health and well-being. Additionally, our TCM acupuncturist has experience working with women struggling with infertility and to assist with pregnancy related concerns.
