Patients are often recommended by their treating Surgeon, to attend a course of physical therapy for rehabilitation pre-operatively, in order to optimize strength and mobility prior to surgery. Prehabilitation is carried out typically for 6-8 weeks, with the main goal of improving recovery post-operatively. Post-operatively, your surgeon may recommend physical therapy with the goals of increasing range of motion and strength, while decreasing pain and any post-operative swelling. If you are scheduled for an upcoming surgery, talk with your Health Partners Professionals physical therapist about recommendations for pre-operative and postoperative care.
